Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD)
Does everyone have Eustachian Tubes?
Yes, Eustachian tubes are a normal part of your overall ear structure. They are small passages running between your middle ear and the upper part of your throat on each side at the back of your nose. Your Eustachian tubes ventilate and equalize pressure in the middle ear areas as well as drain secretions away. Normally, the tubes are closed, opening only when you chew, swallow, or yawn.
The most common complication of ETD is the risk for recurring symptoms. In the past, severe and/or chronic cases of ETD have been treated with invasive measures like placement of pressure equalization tubes (PETs) through the ear drum, or drainage of built-up fluids by making a small cut in the eardrum. Unfortunately, these procedures are not universally successful, and some patients experience a decrease in hearing.
The ACCLARENT AERA® Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation System
The ACCLARENT AERA® system is a safe, brief procedure specifically designed to treat the root cause of ETD – blocked or narrowed Eustachian tubes.
The ACCLARENT AERA® Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation System was specifically designed to address the problem at the source. Dr. Raja can perform this procedure in his offices using endoscopic visualization under local anesthesia. By using a tiny balloon to dilate the Eustachian tube tissue, Dr. Raja will widen the passageway which will allow mucus to drain and airflow to resume to help relieve your symptoms.
ACCLARENT AERA® has been proven to relieve ear pain symptoms in patients with ETD. The use of ACCLARENT AERA®was tested in patients who failed to get relief with daily intranasal steroid spray (for at least 4 weeks) or an oral steroid (at least 1 completed course).

Is ACCLARENT AERA® the right choice for me?
The only way to know for sure is through an evaluation. Dr. Raja will review your history and symptoms and conduct a thorough examination.
He may also recommend a CT scan to rule out any contributing issues within the structures of your ear and the surrounding areas.
